February 14, 2000 - Valentine's Day and exactly one month, to the date, before the
Transit Referendum was to be voted
on by the citizens of Phoenix and my stress level was pretty high. Rich had said that we had 7 p.m. dinner reservations and
I didn't get home until 6:30 and was worried we were running late. I came inside the house and asked if we were ok for time and Rich said, "
Don't be mad, but I couldn't get a reservation anywhere. I called all over today and nobody had a table for two open at a decent hour."
Luckily I was too tired to complain so I just said, ok, let me get changed and we'll just get take out or something. So I put on a pair of jeans
and came back out to the living room and Rich said, "No, I know where we'll go."
So we got in the car and drove for a while and I really had no clue where he was taking me until we pulled into the parking lot of Malony's in
Scottsdale, where we met. I was actually so clueless
that I just thought aw, how sweet, but couldn't even conceive that he might propose. So we sat down and after a few minutes Rich reaches into
his pocket and pulls out a dirty, crumpled piece of paper. I took a closer look and realized that it was the business card that I had written my
phone number on so long ago. It was messy because he had accidently dropped it that night and it had been trampled on.
We both made a few comments about what would have happened and where we would be today if we hadn't realized that he had dropped the card and he had
never been able to call me. Then Rich reached into his pocket again and this time pulled out a beautiful diamond ring.
